Blood Prison – 2025 Review

Location: Mansfield, Ohio

Date: October 10, 2025

Overall Rating: 10/10

Housed inside the ominous Ohio State Reformatory, Blood Prison is nothing short of legendary. The structure alone is jaw-dropping, but what they’ve built inside is a full-throttle nightmare. With its towering cell blocks, thunderous audio, and a relentless cast, this 30–35 minute experience cements itself as one of the most intense, immersive haunts we’ve visited this season.

Entertainment Value: 9.5/10

From the midway to the final scare, Blood Prison packs value into every inch of its grounds. The midway features roaming spooks, photo-ops, local vendors, $5 mini escape rooms, and food trucks offering everything from haunt fuel to coffee (though the coffee shop is sadly only accessible after you’ve gone through). Merch is strong, too, with plenty of gothic and horror-themed gear.

The haunt itself runs a solid 30–35 minutes of true in-attraction action, with some additional time spent navigating transition areas between “attractions.” Timed ticketing is used to help space crowds, though peak nights may still lead to conga-line pacing—visit on a slower night or consider Fast Pass options. A nice bonus: your ticket includes a free prison tour within the next year, extending the value.

A huge thank you to Cat, our Blood Prison haunt correspondent, who graciously helped us bypass the line so we could make it to our next haunt stop on time. She also hooked us up with Touch Passes so we could experience Blood Prison in its most intense form—and wow, what a ride that was!

Costume & Makeup: 10/10

Costuming and makeup were superb. Every character felt meticulously crafted, with detailed prosthetics, masks, and designs that elevated each scene. The eerie realism of the ghoulish prisoners, the heavily themed military squads, and the grotesque circus clowns all blended seamlessly with their settings. This level of detail helped blur the line between actor and environment, creating true immersion.

Cast & Crew: 9.5/10

Blood Prison’s cast was fierce, relentless, and totally committed. From the intense performers in the cell blocks to the military crew flanking a life-sized tank and helicopter, the energy was sky-high. Actors were interactive, quick-witted, and unafraid to push limits—especially for those who opted for the Touch Pass upgrade.

One true standout was the Prison Reverend, whose booming sermon echoed across the cell blocks and created one of the most chilling, commanding presences of the night.

Set Design & Special Effects: 10/10

The venue itself is unbeatable—the Ohio State Reformatory is among the most ominous yet visually stunning haunt properties in the country. Blood Prison takes full advantage of its five- and six-story cell blocks, layering them with dramatic lighting, thunderous audio, and lurking inmates who pounce from the shadows.

One section transported guests “outdoors,” with low-lying fog used beautifully to create an eerie, open-air illusion. Military-themed areas showcased large-scale props like a crashed helicopter and tank, while the circus section delivered vibrant chaos, though it could tie into the prison narrative more strongly.

High-end audio/visual effects, layered fog, and creative scenic transitions ensured the experience stayed disorienting, atmospheric, and cinematic.

Fright/Thrill Factor: 10/10

Blood Prison is an all-out sensory assault. The scale of the venue combined with committed actors and aggressive audio created a terrifying, high-energy experience that rarely let up.

With the Touch Pass upgrade ($7), the intensity escalates further. Guests are grabbed, pulled, shoved, secluded, and even hair-tugged in this extremely hands-on variant. While not for everyone, it provides a one-of-a-kind immersive option. For those who prefer a more traditional haunt experience, the standard pass is still packed with scares.

Few attractions maintain this level of adrenaline for over half an hour—Blood Prison pulls it off flawlessly.

Sharpening the Scare:

  • Queue Atmosphere: Additional roaming actors outside, particularly marquee characters like The Warden, would elevate anticipation during the wait.

  • Theming Consistency: The circus scene was high-energy but felt disconnected from the prison setting. A narrative link (e.g., circus misfits turned inmates) could better tie it in.

  • Intensity Balance: Some sections were extremely intense, while others offered lighter scare density. Distributing actor presence more evenly would keep pacing consistent.

  • Smell Effects: Stronger, scene-specific scents could add another layer of immersion alongside the stellar audio/visual work.

  • Dialogue Variety: A few actors relied heavily on growls or shrieks. Adding more scripted or improvised dialogue would enrich the storytelling.

  • Ticketing Fees: General admission tickets were $35, but with mandatory service fees nearly $10 more per ticket, the total cost felt high. Since onsite sales aren’t an option, guests may appreciate clearer communication upfront about the final ticket price.

🏆 Fright Night MVP:

The Prison Reverend – His haunting sermon, commanding presence, and chilling delivery gave us goosebumps. An unforgettable performance that anchored the eerie weight of the cell blocks.

Jeff’s Haunted Hot Take:

"Fear so real, it’s nearly criminal!"

Recap the Screams:

Blood Prison is over the top in all the right ways—an intense, fully immersive nightmare inside one of the most haunting venues in the country. With stellar set design, a powerhouse cast, and heart-pounding effects, it stands as a must-see attraction for anyone seeking the pinnacle of haunt experiences.
