🎃 Bates Motel & Haunted Hayride — Glen Mills, PA

🎃 Overall Rating — 8.45/10

Some haunts follow trends. Others helped define the industry! Bates Motel & Haunted Hayride remains a Pennsylvania Halloween staple, delivering classic scares, larger-than-life effects, and decades of haunting tradition. This year's visit brought some killer additions, memorable monsters, and a heartfelt tribute to the legend behind it all.

Bates knows its identity and embraces it! With three attractions and a bustling midway featuring roaming monsters, axe throwing, escape rooms, coffin rides, food, and merchandise, there's plenty to keep the Halloween spirit alive.

Guests can enjoy the midway between attractions, and clearly marked GA/VIP queues make navigating the property easy. Lines can grow lengthy, so consider a weekday visit or VIP upgrade. And don't skip the pre-Hayride photo op. It's consistently one of our favorite group pictures of the season!

Bates is a classic haunt experience on an impressive scale, and that's exactly what keeps generations of guests coming back.

🎭 Entertainment Value — 8.5/10

There's plenty of entertainment beyond the screams! Roaming characters bring personality to the midway, including one hilariously sassy clown whose dark humor and quick-witted improvisation had us cracking up.

The Hayride offers some fantastic theatrical moments, from enormous creatures to an exhilarating performer flying overhead near the asylum. The new pyrotechnic finale choreographed to music was a fiery sendoff, although we certainly missed the iconic Headless Horseman!

A little extra midway energy, perhaps louder music or another entertainment feature, could make an already lively atmosphere even better.

💀 Costume & Makeup — 8.5/10

Bates embraces classic horror with a strong assortment of sinister characters and creepy creations. The impressively costumed roaming ice cream man was a standout, while the chapel performer and flying demon made memorable appearances.

The characters complement their environments well, and we'd love to see even more distinctive designs become recognizable Bates staples!

👹 Cast & Crew — 8.25/10

When the Bates actors bring the energy, they really bring it!

The priest and flying demon inside the corn trail's crypt were fantastic, using multiple elevations and feeding off each other's performances. The clowns and swamp characters also delivered entertaining improvisation, while the new toxic wasteland crew brought serious intensity to the Hayride.

Inside the motel's greenhouse, a cleverly concealed actor lying across a table suddenly sat upright with an almost animatronic-like movement, startling even our most stone-faced crew members!

We'd love to see more of this creativity throughout the attractions, as some interactions relied on predictable dialogue or staring.

And a special shoutout to "Scary Tech Guy!" A technician we accidentally caught sneaking away improvised an awkward little scare, announced himself as the "scary tech guy," and scurried off. Absolutely hilarious! 😂

🏚️ Set Design & Special Effects — 9.25/10

This is where Bates really flexes its haunting muscles!

The new toxic wasteland on the Hayride was a knockout! Cohesive theming, impressive effects, an enormous overhead claw, and energetic actors made it one of our favorite scenes of the evening.

The cave's massive, in-house-built animatronic creatures and dragons were equally impressive, while the realistic mineshaft created an incredible sensation of descending underground. The Western Town remains another scenic favorite!

Inside the motel, the gritty kitchen and staircase area and a gruesome room with walls seemingly made of human skin showcased some delightfully disturbing craftsmanship.

The synchronized motel lighting display was another technical highlight. Pyrotechnics throughout the Hayride were excellent, although the gas station scene missed its signature fiery punch. Some deeper bass could also give those larger sequences an even more thunderous impact!

😱 Fright & Thrill Factor — 7.75/10

Bates delivers plenty of traditional thrills, with atmospheric scenes, theatrical surprises, and some well-executed scares.

The greenhouse's disguised actor was a perfect example of effective timing, while Haunted Trail’s crypt and the Hayride's toxic wasteland brought welcome intensity.

Some scares, particularly in the Haunted Trail, became predictable with actors visible before guests approached. Larger groups of approximately 20 through the Bates Motel also reduced opportunities for individual scares.

We'd love to see the Motel finish with one final, unexpected punch that sends guests scrambling toward the exit. No chainsaw required! 😉

🔪 Sharpening the Scare

Even the classics have room to sharpen their blades!

  • Stronger motel finale: Give guests one last unexpected scare that sends them running!

  • Smaller house groups: Consider reducing group sizes to improve pacing and individual scares, allowing for a more intimate & personal experience.

  • More actor improvisation: Build on the fantastic interactions demonstrated by the clowns, swamp crew, and crypt performers.

  • Less predictable actor placement: Better utilize hiding spots and creative approaches, especially in the Haunted Trail.

  • Bring back the Headless Horseman! This iconic Hayride character is sorely missed.

  • Amp up the effects: Restore the gas station's fiery impact and explore deeper bass for the Hayride.

  • Refresh the merchandise: More creative shirt designs would be a welcome addition!

🏆 Fright Night MVPs

🪦 Crypt Priest & Flying Demon: Fantastic teamwork, high energy, and excellent use of their environment!

☣️ Toxic Wasteland Crew: Aggressive, energetic, and instrumental in making the new scene a standout!

🤡 Sassy Midway Clown: Hilarious dark humor and quick-witted improvisation that kept our crew laughing!

🍦 Roaming Ice Cream Man: An impressively costumed character who stood out among the midway monsters!

🕯️ Honoring a Haunt Industry Legend

One of the most meaningful moments came at the end of the Bates Motel, where a heartfelt memorial honors the late Randy Bates.

It's a touching tribute to a man whose passion and creativity helped shape this legendary attraction. Randy's fingerprints are everywhere across the Bates property, and his legacy continues to live on through the memories created here.

We also enjoyed chatting with Ben Bates afterward about the logistics, rising operating costs, and impressive technology behind running such a massive haunt. Getting a glimpse behind the screams gave us an even greater appreciation for the dedication required to keep this Halloween tradition alive!

🎬 Final Fright

Bates Motel & Haunted Hayride remains a true Pennsylvania haunting staple. It's classic, nostalgic, and unapologetically itself!

From massive handcrafted monsters and immersive environments to clever scares and fiery effects, there's plenty to appreciate. Sure, we'd love a little more consistent actor energy and the return of a certain headless equestrian, but Bates continues to deliver the kind of Halloween experience generations have come to love.

"Some haunts become Halloween traditions. Bates Motel helped define what those traditions look like."

And somewhere among the screams, lights, and fog, Randy's legacy continues to haunt these grounds in the very best way possible.
