🎃 Leech Woods — 📍 Damascus, Maryland

👻 Overall Rating: 7.61/10

Deep in the woods of Damascus, Maryland, the Leech family is still stirring up screams, scares, and spooky shenanigans! Returning for our first group visit since 2023, we were eager to see how much Leech Woods had grown. With two new attractions, a bustling midway, and nearly an hour of haunted entertainment, there’s more lurking in these woods than ever before!

Leech Woods might not be the most terrifying or visually extravagant haunt around, but one thing is certain: these folks know how to deliver a FUN night of Halloween entertainment! While our visit had some noticeable inconsistencies, there were plenty of memorable moments worth sinking our teeth into!

🎟️ Entertainment Value — 8.4/10

Entertainment is where Leech Woods truly shines! Since our last visit, they’ve added Clown Carnage, a 3D clown-themed attraction, and the Horror Hayride, which transports guests to the Leech family cemetery. Can’t forget to mention their signature haunted trail. Combined, the three experiences provide close to an hour of in-attraction entertainment!

The midway is an absolute VIBE! Lively music, roaming spooks, axe throwing, midway games, merchandise, delicious food, adult beverages, and photo opportunities make hanging out part of the experience. DJ Sassy Witch, aka owner Tami, keeps the Halloween party alive with infectious enthusiasm, crowd interaction, and a killer playlist!

Even the hayride transportation is entertaining! Between Beetle’s engaging storytelling about the Leech family history and Spider’s hilarious banter and wagon-climbing antics, there’s rarely a dull moment aboard!

And how could we forget the roaming spook handing out “pocket candy”? Candy from a stranger in a haunted midway? SIGN US UP! 🍬😂 We also have to give a shout-out to the whip-cracking character who put on quite the impressive display of skill. Nothing like the sharp CRACK of a whip to keep the midway lively! 😳

🎭 Costume & Makeup — 7.7/10

Leech Woods embraces a classic, old-school haunt aesthetic, featuring creepy creatures, sinister clowns, zombies, and other nightmarish characters lurking throughout the property.

Standout looks included the intimidating Viking-like character at axe throwing, the eerie cemetery bride, and a grotesque mutant in Clown Carnage whose intestinal feast looked disturbingly convincing!

While not every costume or makeup application was particularly elaborate, the stronger character designs complemented their surroundings and helped establish the haunt’s quirky, creepy personality.

👹 Cast & Crew — 7.25/10

This was easily the most inconsistent aspect of our visit, which is unfortunate because some of the performers were absolutely PHENOMENAL!

The strongest actors brought tremendous energy, clever dialogue, and genuine enthusiasm to their roles. A zombie duo near the spider section was particularly impressive, running, jumping, and bringing chaos to the trail. Nurse Lucille and her grotesque companion delivered another memorable performance with creepy character work and engaging improv.

Unfortunately, the difference between the strongest and weakest performers was staggering. We encountered approximately one to two dozen actors who offered little to no interaction whatsoever. Some simply stood or sat silently as our group passed, making no attempt to scare or engage us. Others relied heavily on repetitive haunt one-liners.

For an attraction that depends so heavily on its cast to bring scenes to life, these were significant missed opportunities. The shining stars were easily worthy of 9/10 performances, but the lack of consistency ultimately brought down the category. Stronger coaching, accountability, and more consistent engagement could make a tremendous difference!

🏚️ Set Design & Special Effects — 7.6/10

Leech Woods maintains its old-school haunt charm, favoring rustic environments, wooded pathways, and actor-driven scares over elaborate scenic construction or high-end technology.

One of our favorite moments was the cemetery’s hall of mirrors! A simple yet incredibly effective combination of fog, music, and lighting created a wonderfully disorienting experience. The windmill scene was another visual standout, while lightning and thunder effects helped bring the eerie woods to life.

Clown Carnage is a promising addition, featuring vibrant 3D artwork and some creative scenes. Additional painted props and dimensional scenery could make this attraction even more immersive.

We also loved the larger-than-life talking skeleton above the main trail entrance! With an unseen performer interacting directly with guests, this witty character turned an ordinary queue into an entertaining experience.

🔪 Fright & Thrill Factor — 7.1/10

If you’re searching for nonstop, heart-pounding terror, Leech Woods might not completely satisfy that craving. However, if you appreciate traditional haunt fun, spooky surprises, and entertaining characters, there’s plenty to enjoy!

The strongest scares came from performers who fully committed to their roles, utilizing energetic movement, unexpected interactions, and well-timed appearances.

Unfortunately, inactive cast members created noticeable lulls in intensity. Several scenes also featured stationary props that looked primed for a good jump scare but never delivered.

With stronger actor placement, more consistent engagement, and a few additional practical scares, Leech Woods could significantly elevate its fright factor without losing its approachable, old-school personality.

🌟 Fright Night MVPs

  • Beetle & Spider — Horror Hayride: An outstanding duo! Beetle’s entertaining storytelling and Spider’s hilarious banter, impressive wagon-climbing antics, and relentless energy made both rides memorable.

  • DJ Sassy Pants (Tami) — Midway: The heartbeat of the midway! Her enthusiasm, music selections, and crowd engagement kept the Halloween party going strong.

  • The Talking Skeleton — Main Trail Entrance: A witty, interactive crowd-pleaser who made waiting in line part of the entertainment!

  • Nurse Lucille & Her Mutant Companion — Clown Carnage: Fantastic chemistry, disturbing visuals, and immersive improv made their gruesome scene a standout.

  • The Cemetery Bride — Cemetery Queue: A wonderfully creepy character who helped set the mood before entering the haunted woods.

Honorable mentions to the energetic zombie duo, roaming midway clown, imposing axe-throwing Viking, and the impressive fire breather who entertained guests awaiting their return hayride!

🛠️ Sharpening the Scare

  • Prioritize cast engagement and accountability. Too many performers remained inactive as guests passed. Regular cast monitoring, coaching, and clearer expectations would help eliminate dead zones and improve consistency.

  • Expand improv and dialogue training. Encourage performers to move beyond repetitive one-liners and develop more creative, character-specific interactions. The strongest actors already demonstrate how effective this can be!

  • Strengthen the storytelling. The Leech family history is introduced wonderfully during the hayride and queue, but much of that narrative gets lost within the attraction. More story-driven interactions could create a cohesive experience.

  • Introduce more practical scares. Several stationary props and Christmas trees could become effective scare opportunities with simple actor-controlled mechanisms, adding movement and surprise without major investments.

  • Continue developing Clown Carnage. Additional 3D-painted props, dimensional scenery, and visual tricks would enhance the disorientation and immersion.

  • Improve parking lot illumination. Parking attendants did a commendable job directing vehicles, but additional lighting would improve visibility and guest safety on busy nights.

💀 Final Thoughts

Leech Woods has certainly blossomed since our last visit in 2023! The expanded lineup, energetic midway, entertaining hayride, and several exceptional performers demonstrate just how much potential this haunt has.

There’s still work to be done, particularly with cast consistency. When your attraction relies on actors to bring the woods to life, every performer needs to contribute to the experience.

But here’s the thing: we always have FUN at Leech Woods, and that counts for a whole lot!

Not every haunt needs massive animatronics, Hollywood-quality sets, or relentless terror to deliver a worthwhile night. Sometimes, good old-fashioned haunt charm, a lively atmosphere, and a few unforgettable characters are exactly what the witch doctor ordered!

With a little more polish and a stronger, more consistent cast, Leech Woods could take its growing Halloween experience to another level.

Final Verdict: 7.61/10 — A lively, old-school Halloween adventure with plenty of personality, memorable performers, and room for the scares to grow! 🎃
